Genesis 33 · Grade 4
Grace Between Brothers
Read and Think
Jacob had been afraid of this moment for twenty years. He bowed seven times, showing humility. The old Jacob had pushed ahead of his brother; the new Israel humbled himself before him.
Esau's response was a surprise of grace. He ran, hugged and kissed his brother. God had answered Jacob's prayer by softening Esau's heart. In the New Testament, Jesus tells a parable about a father who ran to welcome his lost son (Luke 15:20), much like Esau's welcome.
Jacob urged Esau to take the gift, and Esau took it (33:11). He said, God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. Jacob named his altar El Elohe Israel (God, the God of Israel), using his new name. The God of his fathers was now truly his own God.
