Rachel's Son Joseph

Name Date

Read the Story

Rachel saw that she had no children, and she envied her sister. She gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob as a wife, and Bilhah had two sons, Dan and Naphtali. Leah gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob, and Zilpah had Gad and Asher. Leah later had Issachar, Zebulun and a daughter named Dinah.

Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and gave her a son. She said, God has taken away my reproach, and named him Joseph, praying, May Yahweh add another son to me.

Jacob wanted to go home, but Laban asked him to stay, because he had learned that the Lord blessed him for Jacob's sake. Jacob asked to keep the speckled and spotted animals as his wages. Laban tried to cheat him, but God made Jacob's flocks grow strong and many. Jacob became very rich.

Genesis 30 · Grade 4

Jealousy and God's Faithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 30 shows the sad results of jealousy. Rachel and Leah competed to have children and win Jacob's love. They each gave their servant to Jacob. Genesis tells this honestly, but God's design from the beginning was one husband and one wife (Genesis 2:24). Having more than one wife brought rivalry and pain.

Even in this messy family, God was at work. Children were gifts from Him. Out of these sons would come the twelve tribes of Israel. God remembered Rachel and gave her Joseph, whose story will fill the rest of Genesis.

Laban kept trying to take advantage of Jacob, but God was watching. Jacob later admitted that it was God, not his own clever methods, who caused his flocks to grow (Genesis 31:9). God's blessing, not human cleverness, brings true success.

Show What You Know

  1. What sin caused trouble between Rachel and Leah?

  2. What was God's design for marriage from the beginning?

  3. What would come from Jacob's sons?

  4. Who did Jacob later say made his flocks grow?

Think About It

  1. Jealousy hurt Rachel and Leah's relationship. How can you fight jealousy in your own heart?

  2. God worked even in a messy family. How does that give you hope for your family?

Memory Verse

“God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb.”

Genesis 30 · Grade 5

God Remembered Rachel

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 30 continues the painful rivalry between Rachel and Leah. Rachel's demand, Give me children, or else I will die, brings Jacob's angry reply, Am I in God's place? Children come from God. Following Sarah's earlier pattern, Rachel and then Leah give their servants to Jacob. Scripture records these customs without approving them; God's design was one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24), and every polygamous household in Genesis suffers conflict.

The children's names tell the story of the sisters' struggle: Naphtali (wrestling) and Gad (fortune), Issachar (reward) and Zebulun (honor). Yet God works through it all. Eleven of Jacob's twelve sons, plus Dinah, are born in Paddan Aram, forming the tribes of Israel. At last God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her. In Scripture, God remembering means He acts faithfully on behalf of His people.

Jacob then negotiates his wages: the speckled, spotted and dark animals. Laban immediately removes those animals and sends them three days away. Jacob uses peeled branches, a practice reflecting the beliefs of his time, but Genesis 31 reveals that God Himself, in a dream, caused the flocks to bear speckled young. Jacob grows exceedingly prosperous, not by his cleverness, but by God's faithful blessing despite Laban's schemes.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Jacob's question Am I in God's place? teach?

  2. What does the Bible's record of polygamy in Genesis show?

  3. What does it mean when the Bible says God remembered someone?

  4. How did Laban try to cheat Jacob?

  5. According to Genesis 31, what really caused Jacob's flocks to prosper?

Think About It

  1. Rachel and Leah kept comparing themselves to each other. How does comparison steal our joy?

  2. Jacob trusted his own methods, but God was the one blessing him. Where are you tempted to take credit for what God has done?
