God Remembered Rachel

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 30 continues the painful rivalry between Rachel and Leah. Rachel's demand, Give me children, or else I will die, brings Jacob's angry reply, Am I in God's place? Children come from God. Following Sarah's earlier pattern, Rachel and then Leah give their servants to Jacob. Scripture records these customs without approving them; God's design was one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24), and every polygamous household in Genesis suffers conflict.

The children's names tell the story of the sisters' struggle: Naphtali (wrestling) and Gad (fortune), Issachar (reward) and Zebulun (honor). Yet God works through it all. Eleven of Jacob's twelve sons, plus Dinah, are born in Paddan Aram, forming the tribes of Israel. At last God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her. In Scripture, God remembering means He acts faithfully on behalf of His people.

Jacob then negotiates his wages: the speckled, spotted and dark animals. Laban immediately removes those animals and sends them three days away. Jacob uses peeled branches, a practice reflecting the beliefs of his time, but Genesis 31 reveals that God Himself, in a dream, caused the flocks to bear speckled young. Jacob grows exceedingly prosperous, not by his cleverness, but by God's faithful blessing despite Laban's schemes.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Jacob's question Am I in God's place? teach?

  2. What does the Bible's record of polygamy in Genesis show?

  3. What does it mean when the Bible says God remembered someone?

  4. How did Laban try to cheat Jacob?

  5. According to Genesis 31, what really caused Jacob's flocks to prosper?

Think About It

  1. Rachel and Leah kept comparing themselves to each other. How does comparison steal our joy?

  2. Jacob trusted his own methods, but God was the one blessing him. Where are you tempted to take credit for what God has done?
