Genesis 30 · Grade 4
Jealousy and God's Faithfulness
Read and Think
Genesis 30 shows the sad results of jealousy. Rachel and Leah competed to have children and win Jacob's love. They each gave their servant to Jacob. Genesis tells this honestly, but God's design from the beginning was one husband and one wife (Genesis 2:24). Having more than one wife brought rivalry and pain.
Even in this messy family, God was at work. Children were gifts from Him. Out of these sons would come the twelve tribes of Israel. God remembered Rachel and gave her Joseph, whose story will fill the rest of Genesis.
Laban kept trying to take advantage of Jacob, but God was watching. Jacob later admitted that it was God, not his own clever methods, who caused his flocks to grow (Genesis 31:9). God's blessing, not human cleverness, brings true success.
