Leaving Home for God's Promise

Name Date

Read the Story

God said to Abram, Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you. God promised: I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. He said all the families of the earth would be blessed in Abram.

Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all their people and possessions, and went to Canaan. At Shechem the Lord appeared to him and said, I will give this land to your offspring. Abram built an altar there and later another near Bethel, and he called on the name of the Lord.

When a famine came, Abram went down to Egypt. He was afraid the Egyptians would harm him because Sarai was beautiful, so he asked her to say she was his sister. Pharaoh took Sarai into his house, but the Lord sent plagues on Pharaoh's house. Pharaoh sent Abram and Sarai away. God protected Sarai and kept His promise safe.

Blessed to Be a Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 12 is a turning point in the Bible. After the sad stories of sin and Babel, God begins a rescue plan with one man, Abram. God tells him to leave everything familiar and go to a land He will show him. Abram does not know where he is going, but he trusts God.

God makes Abram seven great promises: to make him a great nation, to bless him, to make his name great, to make him a blessing, to bless those who bless him, to curse those who curse him, and to bless all the families of the earth through him. In the New Testament, Paul links that last promise to Jesus, Abram's descendant (Galatians 3:8, 16).

Abram obeys and travels to Canaan, building altars to worship the Lord. But Abram is not perfect. In Egypt he is afraid and tells a half-truth, saying Sarai is his sister. Even when Abram fails, God remains faithful. He protects Sarai and keeps His promise moving forward.

Genesis 12 · Grade 5

The Call and the Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 12 begins a new section of the Bible. God speaks to Abram in Haran: Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you. Abram is asked to leave his security behind and to rely completely on God's word. Hebrews 11:8 says that by faith Abram obeyed and went out, not knowing where he was going.

God's promises answer the problems of Genesis 1-11. At Babel, people tried to make a name for themselves; here God says, I will bless you and make your name great. Since the fall, curse has spread; now God speaks of blessing again and again. Most importantly, He says that in Abram all the families of the earth will be blessed. Galatians 3:8 calls this the gospel announced in advance.

Abram obeys, arriving in Canaan and building altars to the Lord at Shechem and near Bethel. Yet faith and fear live side by side in him. During a famine he goes to Egypt and, fearing for his life, tells Sarai to say she is his sister. Pharaoh takes her into his household, but the Lord strikes Pharaoh's house with plagues, and Sarai is returned. The promise depends on God's faithfulness, not Abram's perfection.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God ask Abram to leave, and what does Hebrews 11:8 say about his response?

  2. How do God's promises to Abram answer the story of Babel?

  3. What does Galatians 3:8 call the promise that all nations would be blessed in Abram?

  4. Where did Abram build altars?

  5. What does the Egypt episode teach about God's promise?
