Ezra 7 · Grade 5
The Good Hand of God
Read and Think
Ezra 7 introduces the man for whom the book is named. His genealogy runs back through Zadok and Phinehas to Aaron the chief priest, placing him firmly in Israel's priestly line. He was also a scribe, a careful student and copier of the law of Moses. Ezra repeatedly says the good hand of his God was on him.
Verse 10 is the heart of the chapter: Ezra had set his heart to seek Yahweh's law, to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel. The order matters. Ezra did not teach what he had not first studied and practiced. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16).
The letter of Artaxerxes, written in Aramaic, gave Ezra remarkable support: permission for volunteers to return, gifts from the king and his counselors, supplies from the royal treasurers, tax relief for temple servants, and authority to appoint magistrates who knew God's law. Ezra's response turned from the king to God. He blessed Yahweh, the God of the fathers, who had put such a thing in the king's heart, and he took courage because the hand of Yahweh his God was on him.
