Ezra 1: Cyrus Lets God's People Go Home

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, Yahweh stirred up the king's spirit. Cyrus made a proclamation that God's people could go up to Jerusalem and build Yahweh's house. Their neighbors helped them with silver, gold, goods, animals, and freewill offerings. Cyrus brought out the temple vessels Nebuchadnezzar had taken and counted them out to Sheshbazzar, who brought them up to Jerusalem.

Ezra 2: The People Who Came Home

Ezra 2 lists the people who returned from captivity with Zerubbabel and Jeshua, family by family: the people of Israel, priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants. Some could not prove their family records. The whole assembly numbered 42,360, besides servants and singers. When they came to Yahweh's house in Jerusalem, some heads of families gave freewill offerings to rebuild it.

Ezra 3: The Altar and the Foundation

In the seventh month the people met in Jerusalem as one. Jeshua and Zerubbabel built the altar and offered burnt offerings, and the people kept the feast of booths. In the second year they laid the foundation of Yahweh's temple. The priests blew trumpets and the Levites praised Yahweh, singing that He is good and His loving kindness endures forever. Many shouted for joy, while old men who had seen the first house wept aloud.

Ezra 4: The Work Is Stopped

The adversaries of Judah offered to help build, but Zerubbabel and Jeshua refused. Then the people of the land discouraged the builders and hired counselors against them through the days of Cyrus. In the days of Artaxerxes they wrote a letter accusing Jerusalem of being a rebellious city. The king ordered the work to stop, and the work on God's house stopped until the second year of Darius.

Ezra 5: Building Again

The prophets Haggai and Zechariah prophesied to the Jews in the name of the God of Israel. Zerubbabel and Jeshua began again to build God's house, and the prophets helped them. Tattenai the governor asked who had given them permission, but the eye of their God was on the elders, and the work was not stopped. Tattenai wrote to King Darius, reporting the Jews' answer that Cyrus had decreed the house should be built, and asking that the royal records be searched.

Ezra 6: The Temple Is Finished

King Darius searched the records and found Cyrus's decree at Achmetha. Darius ordered Tattenai to let the work continue and to pay the costs from the royal taxes. The elders built and prospered through the prophesying of Haggai and Zechariah. The house was finished on the third day of Adar in Darius's sixth year. The people dedicated it with joy, set the priests and Levites in their divisions, and kept the Passover and the feast of unleavened bread with joy.

Ezra 7: Ezra the Teacher

In the reign of Artaxerxes, Ezra, a priest descended from Aaron and a skilled scribe in the law of Moses, went up from Babylon to Jerusalem. The good hand of his God was on him, for Ezra had set his heart to seek Yahweh's law, to do it, and to teach it in Israel. Artaxerxes gave Ezra a letter allowing any Israelite to go with him, providing silver and gold for God's house, and giving him authority to appoint judges and teach the law. Ezra blessed Yahweh, who had put this in the king's heart.

Ezra 8: A Safe Journey

Ezra lists the family heads who went up with him. At the river Ahava he found no Levites and sent for them, and God brought ministers for His house. Ezra proclaimed a fast to seek a straight way from God, because he was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers after saying that God's hand is on all who seek Him. God answered. Ezra weighed out the silver, gold, and vessels to twelve priests, who guarded them. The hand of God delivered them from the enemy on the road, and they arrived safely and offered burnt offerings.

Ezra 9: Ezra's Prayer of Confession

Leaders told Ezra that many of the people, priests, and Levites had not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands and their abominations, but had married their daughters. Ezra tore his garment and robe and sat appalled until the evening offering. Then he fell on his knees, spread out his hands to Yahweh, and confessed the sins of the people. He praised God for leaving a remnant and showing loving kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia, and he admitted that no one could stand before God in their guilt.

Ezra 10: The People Promise to Obey

While Ezra prayed and wept before God's house, a great assembly gathered and wept bitterly. Shecaniah confessed the sin and said there was still hope for Israel. He urged Ezra to arise, be courageous, and act. The people swore to obey. All the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered in Jerusalem in the great rain, confessed, and agreed to separate from the foreign wives as Ezra commanded. Leaders examined each case over three months, and the chapter ends with a list of those involved.
