Finished at Last

Name Date

Read the Story

King Darius had the records searched. In the palace at Achmetha, a scroll was found. It held the decree of Cyrus that God's house in Jerusalem should be built, and that the gold and silver vessels should be returned.

Darius told Tattenai to stay away and let the work go on. He also ordered that the costs be paid from the king's taxes. The elders of the Jews built and did well, through the words of Haggai and Zechariah the prophets.

The house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of Darius. The people dedicated God's house with joy. Then they kept the Passover. Yahweh had made them joyful and had turned the king's heart toward them.

Name Date

Read and Think

Darius had the records searched. A scroll was found in a fort in Media. It held the order of Cyrus. God's house was to be built. The king would pay the cost. The gold and silver vessels would go back.

Darius told Tattenai to let the Jews build. He said the king's taxes would pay the costs. The priests would get animals, wheat, salt, wine, and oil each day. Then they could pray for the king and his sons.

The elders built and prospered through the prophesying of Haggai and Zechariah. They finished it as God had commanded and as the kings had said. God Turns the King's Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

The adversaries' letter backfired. When Darius searched the archives, the scroll found at Achmetha confirmed everything the Jews had said. Cyrus had decreed the rebuilding, set its measurements, ordered the costs paid from the royal treasury, and commanded that the vessels be returned to their place in God's house.

Darius went further than permission. He told Tattenai to keep away, ordered the costs paid from the tribute of the province beyond the River, and supplied what the priests needed for daily offerings. He even asked for their prayers for himself and his sons. The officials obeyed with diligence.

With the prophets' encouragement, the elders finished the house in the sixth year of Darius. The dedication included many offerings and twelve male goats as a sin offering for all Israel, one for each tribe. The priests and Levites were set in their divisions as written in the book of Moses. At Passover, those who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the nations joined to seek Yahweh. Ezra explains that Yahweh had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king to strengthen their hands in the work of God's house.
