The Foundation Is Laid

Name Date

Read the Story

In the seventh month the people met in Jerusalem as one. Jeshua the priest and Zerubbabel built the altar of the God of Israel. They were afraid of the people around them. But they still gave gifts to God each morning and evening.

They kept the feast of booths, as the law of Moses said. They also paid workers and bought cedar trees to build. In the second year, the builders laid the foundation of Yahweh's temple.

The priests stood with trumpets, and the Levites praised Yahweh with cymbals. They sang that Yahweh is good and that His loving kindness endures forever. All the people shouted with a great shout. But many old men who had seen the first house wept with a loud voice.

Memory Verse

“They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yahweh, because the foundation of Yahweh’s house had been laid.”

Worship Before Walls

Name Date

Read and Think

When the seventh month came, the people gathered in Jerusalem as one man. First, Jeshua and Zerubbabel built the altar on its base. They feared the peoples of the lands. Yet they gave burnt offerings each morning and evening. They kept the feast of booths as it is written.

They paid the stone workers and carpenters. They sent food and oil to get cedar trees from Lebanon. Cyrus had allowed this. In the second year, Levites twenty years old and up were put in charge of the work.

Then the foundation was laid. The priests blew trumpets. The Levites praised God with cymbals, as David had said to do. They sang that He is good and that His loving kindness endures forever toward Israel. Many shouted for joy, but old men who remembered the first house wept aloud. The people could not tell the shout of joy from the noise of weeping.

Ezra 3 · Grade 5

Joy and Tears Together

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezra 3 shows the returned exiles setting their priorities. The first thing they built was not houses or walls but the altar of the God of Israel. They worshiped even though they were afraid of the peoples around them. They kept the daily offerings and the feast of booths, following what was written in the law of Moses.

With money, food, and oil they hired masons and carpenters and brought cedar from Lebanon, as Cyrus had allowed. In the second month of the second year, Zerubbabel and Jeshua appointed the Levites to oversee the work, and the builders laid the foundation of Yahweh's temple.

The celebration followed the pattern set by David. The priests blew trumpets, and the sons of Asaph praised with cymbals. They sang, For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel. The people shouted with a great shout. Yet many older priests, Levites, and leaders who had seen the first house wept aloud. Joy over what God was doing mixed with grief over what had been lost, and the sound was heard far away. In the New Testament, Peter says believers are built up as living stones into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5).

  1. What was the first thing the exiles built?
