Family by Family

Read the Story

Ezra 2 is a list of the people who came back from captivity. Their leaders were Zerubbabel and Jeshua. Each person went back to his own city in Judah.

It names the families. It names the priests and the Levites. It names the singers and the men who kept the gates. Some families could not find their records to show they belonged to Israel or to the priests. They waited until a priest could ask God.

In all there were more than forty-two thousand people. There were servants and singers too. They brought horses, mules, camels, and donkeys. Then they came to Jerusalem. Some of the heads of families gave gifts to build God's house again.

Memory Verse

“So the priests and the Levites, with some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, lived in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.”

Ezra 2 · Grade 4

The Returning Assembly

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezra 2 lists the people who came back from Babylon. Zerubbabel and Jeshua led them. They are listed by family and by town. Real people came home to the land God had promised.

The list has priests and Levites. It has singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants. Some could not find their genealogical records. Those priests were kept from eating the most holy things until a priest could stand up with Urim and Thummim.

The whole group was 42,360 people. There were also 7,337 servants and 200 singers. They reached the place of God's house in Jerusalem. Some heads of families gave freely to set it up again. They gave according to their ability to the treasury of the work.

Show What You Know

  1. By what two ways are the people listed?

  2. What happened to priests without records?

  3. How large was the whole assembly?

  4. How did they give to God's house?

Think About It

  1. God recorded each family by name. How does it feel to know God knows you personally?

  2. The people gave according to their ability. What can you give to God's work right now?

Memory Verse

“Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.”

Names in God's Story

Name Date

Read and Think

A list of names may seem dull, but Ezra 2 matters. It shows that God's people did not vanish in exile. Family by family, town by town, they came back. The list connects the returning community to the tribes, cities, and families of Israel's past, and it shows that God's promises were kept to real people.

The careful records also mattered for worship. Priests had to show that they descended from Aaron. When some could not find their records, they were set aside from the priesthood until a priest could ask God with Urim and Thummim. Worship was to be done God's way, not guessed at.

The assembly numbered 42,360, along with servants, singers, and animals. When they reached the place of Yahweh's house, the leaders gave freewill offerings according to their ability: gold, silver, and priests' garments. Their first act on arrival was generosity toward God's house, and then all Israel lived in their cities.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the list show about God's people in exile?

  2. Why were careful records important for priests?

  3. How did the leaders decide how much to give?

  4. What was the first act of the leaders on arrival?

  5. Where did all Israel live afterward?

Crossword

  2. Animals that were ridden.
  3. Animals with humps that came on the trip.

  2. People who made music.

Think About It

  1. God kept a record of every family. How does that encourage you about your place in God's family?

  2. The people's first act at home was to give. What does your giving show about what matters most to you?

“Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.”
