Ezra 2 · Grade 4

The Returning Assembly

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezra 2 lists the people who came back from Babylon. Zerubbabel and Jeshua led them. They are listed by family and by town. Real people came home to the land God had promised.

The list has priests and Levites. It has singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants. Some could not find their genealogical records. Those priests were kept from eating the most holy things until a priest could stand up with Urim and Thummim.

The whole group was 42,360 people. There were also 7,337 servants and 200 singers. They reached the place of God's house in Jerusalem. Some heads of families gave freely to set it up again. They gave according to their ability to the treasury of the work.

Show What You Know

  1. By what two ways are the people listed?

  2. What happened to priests without records?

  3. How large was the whole assembly?

  4. How did they give to God's house?

Think About It

  1. God recorded each family by name. How does it feel to know God knows you personally?

  2. The people gave according to their ability. What can you give to God's work right now?

Memory Verse

“Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.”

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for my family. Help me . Amen.

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • What does a list of names teach about God?
  • Why does God value a willing heart more than a large amount?
