Hope for Israel

Name Date

Read the Story

While Ezra prayed and wept before God's house, a very great crowd of men, women, and children gathered. They wept bitterly too.

A man named Shecaniah told Ezra that they had sinned against God. But he said there was still hope for Israel. He told Ezra to arise, because they were with him. He told him to be brave and do what was right. Ezra made the leaders promise to obey.

All the men of Judah and Benjamin came to Jerusalem within three days. They sat in front of God's house, trembling because of their sin and because of the great rain. Ezra told them to confess to Yahweh and do His will. They answered with a loud voice that they would do as he said. Leaders then worked through each family's case.

Courage to Obey

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezra prayed and wept before God's house. A great crowd of men, women, and children came. They wept too. Shecaniah said the people had sinned against God in their marriages. Yet he said there was hope for Israel.

Shecaniah said they should make a promise to God. He told Ezra to rise up and lead, and they would be with him. Ezra made the leaders, priests, Levites, and all Israel swear to act. Word went out. Everyone must come to Jerusalem in three days.

In the ninth month, the men sat in the open square, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain. Ezra called them to confess to Yahweh and separate from the peoples of the land and the foreign wives. They agreed, but asked for officials to handle each case because of the rain and the number of people. Ezra and the leaders looked into each case. It took three months. The chapter ends with the names of those involved, including priests and Levites.

Ezra 10 · Grade 5

Repentance in the Rain

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezra's public grief moved the people. A very great assembly gathered and wept bitterly. Shecaniah the son of Jehiel spoke honestly: they had trespassed against God, yet there was hope for Israel. Repentance was possible because God is merciful.

He urged Ezra to arise, be courageous, and act, promising the people's support. Ezra put the leaders under oath and then fasted and mourned in a room of the temple. A summons called all the returned exiles to Jerusalem within three days.

On the twentieth day of the ninth month, in the season of heavy rain, the people sat trembling in the square before God's house. Ezra told them to confess to Yahweh and separate themselves from the peoples of the land and the foreign wives. The assembly agreed with a loud voice but asked for an orderly process, so leaders and judges examined each case over three months. A few opposed the plan. The list that follows includes priests, Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, showing that the call to faithfulness reached every part of the community. The book ends not with a celebration but with a people learning to take God's word seriously.

  1. Why was repentance possible?

  2. What did Ezra do after putting the leaders under oath?

  3. What did the assembly ask for?
