The King's Proclamation

Name Date

Read the Story

For many years God's people had lived far from home. God had promised through the prophet Jeremiah that they would come home. In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of the king.

Cyrus sent a message through all his kingdom. He said God gave him the kingdoms of the earth. He said God told him to build a house in Jerusalem. Anyone of God's people could go up and build. Their neighbors should help them with silver, gold, goods, and animals.

God stirred the hearts of many. The leaders, priests, and Levites got ready. King Cyrus also brought out the gold and silver cups and bowls. They had been taken from God's house long ago. They were counted out to Sheshbazzar, and he brought them up to Jerusalem.

Memory Verse

“Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of Yahweh, the God of Israel (he is God), which is in Jerusalem.”

God Stirs a King's Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Babylon had burned Jerusalem and its temple. About seventy years later, Ezra's story begins. Now Persia ruled in place of Babylon. In the first year of Cyrus, Yahweh stirred up the king's spirit so that the word spoken by Jeremiah might be fulfilled.

Cyrus wrote that the God of heaven had told him to build Him a house in Jerusalem. Any of God's people could go up to build. Those who stayed should help them. They could give silver, gold, goods, and animals. They could also give gifts for God's house.

The heads of families, the priests, and the Levites rose up, everyone whose spirit God had stirred. Cyrus gave back the vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had taken. There were more than five thousand things of gold and silver. Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah, took them back to Jerusalem.

The Word Fulfilled

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Ezra begins with a promise kept. Jeremiah had said that the exile would last seventy years and that God would then bring His people back. Ezra tells us that Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia so that this word would be fulfilled. A foreign ruler who did not know God as Israel did still carried out God's purpose.

Cyrus's proclamation gave the exiles permission to return and rebuild the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem. It also asked their neighbors to supply them with silver, gold, goods, and animals, besides freewill offerings. This echoes the exodus, when Israel left Egypt with gifts from their neighbors.

God's work moved through many hearts. The leaders, priests, and Levites rose up because God had stirred their spirit. Cyrus returned the temple vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had placed in the house of his gods, and they were counted out by the treasurer to Sheshbazzar. The return showed that God had not forgotten His people, His house, or His word.

Show What You Know

  1. How long had Jeremiah said the exile would last?

  2. How does the return echo the exodus?

  3. Where had Nebuchadnezzar placed the vessels?

  4. Who counted out the vessels to Sheshbazzar?

  5. What did the return show about God?
