Ezekiel 42 · Grade 4

Separating the Holy

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel says the man led him to the outer court, to the rooms on the north side of the temple. They were long buildings in three stories with walkways between them. Matching rooms stood on the south side.

The man explained that these were holy rooms. The priests who drew near to Yahweh would eat the most holy offerings there. Before going out to the people, they would take off the holy garments they wore while serving and put on other clothes.

Last, the man measured the whole temple area. Each of the four sides was five hundred reeds. A wall surrounded it all, to make a separation between what was holy and what was common.

  2. What did the priests do in these rooms?

  3. Why did the priests change clothes before going out?

Ezekiel 42 · Grade 5

The Wall of Holiness

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 42 completes the tour of the temple area. Ezekiel says the guide showed him two large three-story buildings of rooms, one on the north and one on the south, facing the temple. These priests' chambers were stepped back as they rose, with walkways in front of them.

The rooms had a sacred purpose. The priests who drew near to Yahweh would eat the most holy offerings there and store the grain, sin, and trespass offerings. Their serving garments were holy and had to remain in the chambers. They had to change before going to the people, so that holy things would not be treated as common.

The chapter closes with the measurement of the whole complex: five hundred units on each side, a perfect square. The wall had one purpose: to make a separation between that which was holy and that which was common. Ezekiel 22:26 had condemned priests who made no distinction between holy and common. In the New Testament, 1 Peter 1:15-16 calls believers to be holy in all their behavior, because God is holy.

Show What You Know

  1. Where were the priests' chambers?

  2. Why did the priests change garments?

  3. Which earlier chapter condemned priests for failing to distinguish holy and common?

  4. Which New Testament passage calls believers to be holy?

  1. The temple wall reversed the failure of chapter 22. Why does God care that His people know the difference between holy and common?

  2. 1 Peter calls believers to be holy in all their behavior. What does that look like in everyday life?

Memory Verse

“He measured it on the four sides. It had a wall around it, the length five hundred cubits, and the width five hundred cubits, to make a separation between that which was holy and that which was common.”
