Ezekiel 42 · Grade 5
The Wall of Holiness
Read and Think
Ezekiel 42 completes the tour of the temple area. Ezekiel says the guide showed him two large three-story buildings of rooms, one on the north and one on the south, facing the temple. These priests' chambers were stepped back as they rose, with walkways in front of them.
The rooms had a sacred purpose. The priests who drew near to Yahweh would eat the most holy offerings there and store the grain, sin, and trespass offerings. Their serving garments were holy and had to remain in the chambers. They had to change before going to the people, so that holy things would not be treated as common.
The chapter closes with the measurement of the whole complex: five hundred units on each side, a perfect square. The wall had one purpose: to make a separation between that which was holy and that which was common. Ezekiel 22:26 had condemned priests who made no distinction between holy and common. In the New Testament, 1 Peter 1:15-16 calls believers to be holy in all their behavior, because God is holy.
