Ezekiel 19 · Grade 4

A Lamentation for the Princes

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel. A lamentation was a song sung at a funeral. Judah's kingdom had not ended yet, but God was already giving its funeral song.

In the song, the mother was a lioness, a picture of Judah and its royal family. One cub became a fierce young lion, but the nations heard of him and brought him with hooks to Egypt. Many readers think this was King Jehoahaz. She raised another cub, and the nations caught him in a net and brought him to the king of Babylon. Many readers think this was King Jehoiachin.

Then the song changes picture. The mother was like a vine planted by the waters, fruitful and full of branches, with strong rods fit for rulers. But the vine was plucked up and cast down, and the east wind dried up its fruit. Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land. The kings had trusted their own strength instead of God, and there was no strong branch left to rule.

Show What You Know

  1. What kind of song is a lamentation?

  2. Who do the two cubs represent?

  3. What happened to the vine planted by the waters?

  4. Why was there no strong branch left?

Ezekiel 19 · Grade 5

A Funeral Song for Kings

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 19 is a qinah, a funeral lament written in the limping rhythm of Hebrew mourning poetry. God told Ezekiel to take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel while Zedekiah still reigned. Singing a dirge for a living dynasty was itself a prophecy: the house of David as Judah knew it was dying.

The first image is a lioness, recalling Jacob's blessing of Judah as a lion's cub in Genesis 49. She raised a cub who learned to catch the prey, but he was taken in the nations' pit and brought with hooks to Egypt. Many readers identify him with King Jehoahaz. A second cub rose, and the nations spread their net and brought him in a cage to the king of Babylon; many readers identify him with King Jehoiachin. Royal power that should have shepherded the people had become predatory.

The second image is a vine planted by the waters, fruitful and full of branches, with strong rods for the scepters of those who ruled. But it was plucked up in fury, the east wind dried up its fruit, and fire went out from its own branches. That last detail points to Zedekiah, whose rebellion brought about the final ruin. Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land. The lament ends with no strong rod to be a scepter, though chapter 17 has already promised a tender twig God himself will plant. In the New Testament, Revelation 5:5 says: Behold, the Lion who is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was it significant to sing a funeral song while Zedekiah still reigned?

  2. What earlier blessing does the lioness image recall?

  3. What does fire going out from the vine's own branches suggest?

  4. Which New Testament verse names the true Lion of Judah?

Think About It

  1. Lament is a way of bringing grief honestly to God. How can lament be an act of faith?

  2. The vine was ruined by fire from its own branches. How can our own choices harm the people around us?
