Ephesians 3 · Grade 3

The Love of Christ

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul was a prisoner. But he still wrote about God's plan. God showed him a mystery. A mystery here is a secret God now makes known. The secret is that Gentiles share in God's promise too. Jews and Gentiles are one body in Christ.

Paul called himself the very least of all saints. Yet God gave him a job. He would preach the riches of Christ to the Gentiles.

Then Paul said, I bow my knees to the Father. He prayed that Christ would live in their hearts. He wanted them to be rooted and grounded in love. He prayed they would know Christ's love, which is bigger than we can know. God is able to do more than all we ask or think!

Ephesians 3 · Grade 4

Able to Do Exceedingly Abundantly

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes, I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles. God had made known to him a mystery. In earlier times it was hidden. Now it was revealed: that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News.

Paul is amazed that God chose him. To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. Unsearchable means too great to measure. Through the church, God shows His wisdom even to powers in the heavenly places. In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.

Then Paul prays: For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father. He asks God to strengthen them by His Spirit, so that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith. He wants them to be rooted and grounded in love. He prays that they will understand the width and length and height and depth of Christ's love. He ends with praise to God, who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

Ephesians 3 · Grade 5

Christ's Love Which Surpasses Knowledge

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins, For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles. He explains the special task God gave him. By revelation the mystery was made known to me. In earlier ages it was kept hidden, but now the Spirit has revealed it to the apostles and prophets. The mystery is this: the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News.

Paul does not think he deserves this task. To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. God's plan was hidden for ages, but now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places. Manifold means having many sides, like a jewel. Because of Christ, In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him. So Paul asks them not to lose heart because of his troubles.

Paul then writes one of the great prayers of the Bible. I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He asks God to make them strong inside by His Spirit, that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith. He prays that, being rooted and grounded in love, they may comprehend the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge. The chapter closes with praise: Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory.

  1. What does Paul call the mystery's message for the Gentiles?

  2. How does Paul describe himself?

  3. What does manifold mean?

  4. Where does Paul pray Christ will dwell?

  5. What does Christ's love surpass?
