Before we know Jesus, we are far from God. But God has great mercy. He loves us very much. He gives us new life with Jesus.

We do not earn this. It is a gift from God. God made us to do good things. Jesus also makes people one family. Jews and non-Jews can come to God together.

By Grace Through Faith

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul says that without God, people were dead in their sins. They lived far from God. But God, being rich in mercy, loved us. He made us alive together with Christ.

We are saved by grace through faith. We cannot work for it. It is the gift of God. We are his workmanship. God made us in Christ to do good works.

Long ago, a wall stood between Jews and Gentiles. Gentiles are people who are not Jews. Jesus broke down that wall. Now both can come near to God. They are like one big house where God lives.

Memory Verse

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.”

His Workmanship

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul describes life without God. You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins. People followed the ways of this world. But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, made us alive together with Christ.

Then Paul explains how this happens: for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. Grace means God's kindness that we do not earn. Good works do not save us, but God made us for good works. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.

Gentiles once were far from God's promises. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of separation. Jews and Gentiles are fellow citizens and members of God's household. Christ Jesus himself is the chief cornerstone of this holy temple.

Ephesians 2 · Grade 5

Made Near in the Blood of Christ

Name Date

Read and Think

Ephesians 2 starts with a hard truth. Paul tells the believers that they were once dead in transgressions and sins, following the course of this world. He includes himself: We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh. Then come two powerful words, But God. God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

Paul gives one of the clearest summaries of the Good News: for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. Salvation is not a reward. Yet good works still matter, because they flow from what God has done. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

Next Paul speaks to Gentiles. Once they were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ. Christ broke down the middle wall of separation and made peace, so that through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. Believers are no longer strangers and foreigners. They are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone, growing into a holy temple in the Lord.
