The Everlasting Arms

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses, the man of God, blessed Israel before his death. He said God came from Sinai and gave them the law. Moses commanded the law as an inheritance for Israel.

He blessed each tribe. Levi would teach God's ordinances and offer incense. Benjamin, the beloved of Yahweh, would dwell in safety. Joseph's land would be blessed with dew, the sun, and the best of the ancient mountains.

Moses ended with praise. There is no one like God, who rides on the heavens to help. The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. You are happy, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by Yahweh?

Deuteronomy 33 · Grade 4

Blessings for Each Tribe

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 33 records Moses' final blessing on the tribes, like Jacob's blessing in Genesis 49. It begins with God coming from Sinai with His holy ones. He gave the law out of love for His people.

Each tribe receives a word. Reuben would live. Judah would have help against enemies. Levi would teach God's law and serve at the altar. Benjamin is the beloved of Yahweh, covered by Him all day long. Joseph receives rich blessings of land and strength. Simeon is not named.

The song ends by praising Israel's God, not Israel. There is no one like Him. He is their eternal dwelling place, holding them with everlasting arms. Israel is happy only because they are a people saved by Yahweh, their shield and help.

Deuteronomy 33 · Grade 5

The Eternal God Is Your Dwelling Place

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 33 is Moses' last blessing on the tribes, parallel to Jacob's blessing in Genesis 49. It opens with a vision of God's majesty. Yahweh came from Sinai, rose from Seir, and shone from Mount Paran, with myriads of holy ones. Yes, he loves the people. The law Moses gave was an inheritance for the assembly of Jacob, a gift of love rather than a burden.

Moses then speaks a word over each tribe. Reuben would live and not die. Judah would be helped against his adversaries. Levi, faithful at Massah and Meribah, would teach Jacob God's ordinances and offer incense and whole burnt offerings. Benjamin, the beloved of Yahweh, would dwell in safety between His shoulders. Joseph receives abundant blessings of heaven, deep springs, and ancient mountains, with the favor of him who lived in the bush. Zebulun, Issachar, Gad, Dan, Naphtali, and Asher follow.

The blessing climaxes in praise: There is no one like God, Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens for your help. The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Israel's happiness and security rest entirely on God: Who is like you, a people saved by Yahweh, the shield of your help? Believers today share this security in Christ, from whose hand no one can snatch them (John 10:28).

Show What You Know

  1. How is the law described?

  2. Where did Levi prove faithful?

  3. Whose favor did Joseph receive?

  4. What is Israel's dwelling place?

  5. How do believers share this security?
