Deuteronomy 28 · Grade 4
The Two Paths
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 28 lays out the covenant's blessings and curses. If Israel listened to God's voice, blessings would overtake them in city and field, in families and herds, in baskets and kneading troughs, and in coming in and going out. Rain would fall in its season, and other nations would see that Israel was called by Yahweh's name.
The curses are much longer. If Israel turned away, every blessing would be reversed: drought, disease, crop failure, defeat, and confusion. Worst of all, God would scatter them among the nations, where they would serve gods of wood and stone and find no rest.
Moses notes a key cause: they did not serve God with joyfulness and gladness of heart in the time of plenty. These warnings later came true when Israel and Judah were exiled. Yet God also promised to restore them, as chapter 30 shows.
