God's Holy People

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses said, You are God's children. God chose you to be His own people.

God told them which food to eat. They could eat a cow, a sheep, or a goat. They could eat fish with fins and scales. Some animals and birds were not for them to eat.

Each year they gave a tenth of their grain, wine, and oil. They ate it before God and were glad. Every third year they shared it with the Levite, the person far from home, the child with no father, and the widow.

Memory Verse

“For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.”

Deuteronomy 14 · Grade 3

A Tenth for Joy and Sharing

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses told Israel, You are the children of God. You are a holy people, chosen to be His own possession. So they must not copy the way the nations mourned for the dead.

God gave them food laws. They could eat animals that part the hoof and chew the cud, like the ox, sheep, goat, and deer. They could eat fish with fins and scales and all clean birds. These laws set Israel apart.

Every year they must tithe their grain, wine, and oil and eat it before God with joy. If the way was too long, they could sell it for money and buy food at God's place. Every third year the tithe was stored in their towns for the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.

Deuteronomy 14 · Grade 4

Set Apart to Share

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 14 opens with Israel's identity. They are children of Yahweh their God and a holy people chosen for His own possession. Because of who they are, they must not cut themselves for the dead like the nations did.

The food laws list clean animals, such as the ox, sheep, goat, and deer, along with fish with fins and scales and clean birds. These rules marked Israel as different in everyday life. In the New Testament, Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19), but the call to be holy in daily life remains.

The tithe was a tenth of the harvest. Israel ate it before God and rejoiced, learning to fear God always. Every third year, the tithe was stored in each town for the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so they could eat and be satisfied. Giving was joyful worship and care for the needy.

Deuteronomy 14 · Grade 5

Holiness at the Table

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 14 roots Israel's practice in their identity: You are the children of Yahweh your God. Because they belonged to Him, Israel must not cut themselves or shave their foreheads in mourning as the nations did. Holiness began with knowing whose they were.

The food laws distinguished clean from unclean animals: land animals that part the hoof and chew the cud, water creatures with fins and scales, and birds not on the forbidden list, like the eagle, vulture, and owl. These rules set Israel apart at every meal. Jesus later declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19), but God still calls His people to be holy in all conduct.

The tithe of grain, new wine, oil, and firstborn animals was eaten at God's chosen place in a joyful feast, so that you may learn to fear Yahweh your God always. If the distance was too great, it could be turned into money and spent there. Every third year the tithe stayed in the towns for the Levite, foreigner, fatherless, and widow, and God promised to bless the giver in all the work of his hands.
