A Long Trip

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses talked to God's people. They were near the Jordan River. He told them about their long trip.

God said it was time to go to the good land. Moses chose wise men to help him lead. Twelve men went to look at the land. They came back with fruit. They said the land was good.

But the people were afraid. They did not trust God. Moses said God would fight for them. He said God carried them like a man carries his son. But they still did not go. So they had to turn back.

Memory Verse

Behold, Yahweh your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Yahweh the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

Remember the Way

Name Date

Read the Story

Deuteronomy begins with Moses speaking to all Israel. They were camped beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. Moses began to explain God's law and to remind them of their journey.

At Horeb, God told them they had stayed at the mountain long enough. The people had grown as many as the stars. Moses chose wise men from each tribe to be judges. He told them to judge fairly, for the judgment is God's.

Twelve spies saw the good land and brought back fruit. But the people grumbled and would not go up. They did not believe God, who had carried them through the wilderness. So that whole group would not enter the land, except Caleb and Joshua.

Memory Verse

Behold, Yahweh your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Yahweh the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

Deuteronomy 1 · Grade 4

Fear or Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy means a second telling of the law. Forty years after leaving Egypt, Moses spoke to a new generation in the land of Moab. He started by retelling their story so they would not repeat their parents' mistakes.

Moses had shared the work of leading by choosing wise and respected men as judges. He told them to hear small and great alike, and not to be afraid of anyone, because judgment belongs to God.

At Kadesh Barnea, the spies reported a good land, but the people refused to go up. Moses reminded them that God goes before them and carried them as a father carries his son. Still they did not trust Him, and that generation had to wander in the wilderness.

Deuteronomy 1 · Grade 5

The God Who Carries

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy is made of speeches Moses gave on the plains of Moab, just before Israel crossed the Jordan. The people listening were mostly the children of those who had left Egypt. Moses opened by reviewing the forty years, beginning at Horeb, where God said it was time to move on toward the land He had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

As the nation grew, Moses could not bear their burdens alone. He appointed wise, understanding, and respected leaders as judges. They were to treat the foreigner and the Israelite the same and to show no favoritism, because the judgment is God's.

The saddest memory came from Kadesh Barnea. The spies brought fruit and said the land was good, yet the people rebelled, imagining that God hated them. Moses reminded them that God had carried them through the wilderness like a father carrying his son, going before them in fire by night and cloud by day. Unbelief, not weakness, kept that generation out.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did Moses give these speeches?

  2. Who were most of the listeners?

  3. How were the judges to treat people?

  4. What did the people wrongly imagine at Kadesh?

  5. What kept that generation out of the land?
