Deuteronomy 1 · Grade 5

The God Who Carries

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy is made of speeches Moses gave on the plains of Moab, just before Israel crossed the Jordan. The people listening were mostly the children of those who had left Egypt. Moses opened by reviewing the forty years, beginning at Horeb, where God said it was time to move on toward the land He had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

As the nation grew, Moses could not bear their burdens alone. He appointed wise, understanding, and respected leaders as judges. They were to treat the foreigner and the Israelite the same and to show no favoritism, because the judgment is God's.

The saddest memory came from Kadesh Barnea. The spies brought fruit and said the land was good, yet the people rebelled, imagining that God hated them. Moses reminded them that God had carried them through the wilderness like a father carrying his son, going before them in fire by night and cloud by day. Unbelief, not weakness, kept that generation out.
