Amos 8 · Grade 3

Not a Famine of Bread

Name Date

Read the Story

Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. The fruit was ripe. Israel was ripe for judgment too.

Merchants wanted the holy day to end so they could sell grain. They cheated with false scales. They bought the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. God said, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

God warned of a famine. Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing Yahweh's words. People would run back and forth to seek Yahweh's word, and will not find it.

Memory Verse

“Behold, the days come,” says the Lord Yahweh, “that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing Yahweh’s words.”

For families: talk about these together.

  • How can you be honest in how you treat others?
  • The merchants cheated people with false scales. How can you be honest when no one is watching?
