Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 1: Yahweh Will Roar

Amos was among the herdsmen of Tekoa. He said: Yahweh will roar from Zion. Then God named the sins of Israel's neighbors: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom and Ammon. Each time He said, For three transgressions, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment. God saw how nations treated people, and He judged cruelty.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 2: Judah and Israel Too

Amos 2 continues with Moab, then turns to God's own people. Judah rejected Yahweh's law. Israel sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and trampled the poor. God reminded them: I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness. I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. But they told the prophets, Don't prophesy!

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 3: Do Two Walk Together?

Amos 3 reminds Israel: I have chosen only you of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins. Amos asks questions with obvious answers: Do two walk together, unless they have agreed? Will a lion roar when he has no prey? Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared. Who will not fear?

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 4: Yet You Haven't Returned

Amos 4 speaks to the rich women of Samaria who oppress the poor. Israel kept religious feasts and bragged about offerings, but did not obey. God sent hunger, drought, blight and locusts to call them back, and each time says, yet you haven't returned to me. So God said, prepare to meet your God, Israel. He is the One who forms the mountains and creates the wind.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 5: Let Justice Roll

Amos 5 is a lament over Israel. Yet God says, Seek me, and you will live. Amos urges, Seek good, and not evil, that you may live. Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. God rejects worship without justice: I hate, I despise your feasts. Instead: But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Chapter 6Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 6: At Ease in Zion

Amos 6 warns: Woe to those who are at ease in Zion. Israel's leaders lay on beds of ivory, ate the best lambs, sang songs and drank wine, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. God said, I abhor the pride of Jacob. They would go captive with the first, and the feasting would end. They had turned justice into poison.

Chapter 7Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 7: The Plumb Line

Amos 7 tells three visions. When God showed locusts and then fire, Amos prayed, Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small. And Yahweh relented. Then God showed a plumb line, a tool for checking if a wall is straight, and said He would measure His people. Amaziah the priest told Amos to leave, but Amos answered that he was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs, and that Yahweh took him from following the flock.

Chapter 8Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 8: A Famine of Hearing

Amos 8 begins with a vision: behold, a basket of summer fruit. The fruit was ripe; Israel was ripe for judgment. Merchants could not wait for the Sabbath to end so they could cheat the poor with false scales. God said, Surely I will never forget any of their works. He warned of a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing Yahweh's words.

Chapter 9Preschool–Grade 5

Amos 9: I Will Raise Up the Tent of David

Amos 9 begins with the Lord beside the altar announcing that no one could hide from His judgment. Yet God would not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. He would sift Israel like grain, and not the least kernel will fall on the earth. Then the promise: In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen. God would bring His people back, they would plant vineyards, and God would plant them on their land.
