Amos 7 · Grade 5
I Was a Herdsman
Read and Think
Amos 7 shows the prophet as an intercessor, someone who prays for others. Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, he formed locusts. When they finished eating the grass of the land, Amos cried: Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small. Yahweh relented concerning this. A second vision of judgment by fire followed, and again Amos pleaded: Lord Yahweh, stop, I beg you! Again God relented. Prayer matters to God.
The third vision changes everything: behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. God asked, Amos, what do you see? A plumb line measures whether a wall is true. God would set His standard among His people. They had leaned so far that the wall must come down. I will not again pass by them any more.
Then comes conflict. Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to King Jeroboam, saying Amos had conspired against him. Amaziah told Amos: You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah. Bethel was the king's sanctuary. Amos replied: I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs; and Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. Amos's authority came from God's call, not a title or family line.

Think About It
Twice God relented after Amos prayed. What does this teach about the power of prayer?
God measured Israel with a plumb line. What is God's straight standard for your life, and how do you measure up through His grace?
Memory Verse
“Yahweh said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I will set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.”
