Amos 7 · Grade 4

How Could Jacob Stand?

Name Date

Read and Think

Amos 7 records visions. First, God formed locusts to eat the crops. Amos cried, Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small. Yahweh relented concerning this. Next came judgment by fire, and Amos prayed again. Again God relented. Amos shows the power of praying for others.

The third vision was different: the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. A plumb line hangs straight down. Builders use it to see if a wall leans. God would hold Israel up to His straight standard, and He said, I will not again pass by them any more.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel accused Amos of conspiring against the king. He told Amos to flee to Judah and don't prophesy again any more at Bethel. Amos answered, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs. God had called him, so he would not stop.

  • The priest at Bethel tried to send the prophet off. How can you stay kind and faithful when someone pushes you away?
