Amos 6 · Grade 4
Woe to Those at Ease
Read and Think
Amos 6 begins: Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria. The leaders felt safe because they were rich and powerful. They put far away the evil day, pretending trouble would never come.
Amos describes their lives: they lie on beds of ivory, and eat the lambs out of the flock. They strum on the strings of a harp and drink wine in bowls. Their sin was not just luxury. They are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. The nation was falling apart, and they did not care.
God answered: I abhor the pride of Jacob. Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive. The feasting and lounging will end. Amos asks, Do horses run on the rocky crags? It makes no sense, and neither did their injustice. But you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.
