Seek Me and Live

Name Date

Read the Story

Amos sang a sad song over Israel. But God still said, Seek me, and you will live. God made the Pleiades and Orion, stars in the sky.

Israel was unfair to the poor. They took bribes in the courts. Amos said, Seek good, and not evil, that you may live. Hate evil, love good.

God said, I hate, I despise your feasts. He would not listen to their songs, because they were unfair. God wanted something else: But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

“But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Amos 5 · Grade 4

Justice Like Rivers

Name Date

Read and Think

Amos 5 is a lament, a funeral song: The virgin of Israel has fallen; She shall rise no more. Yet even in sorrow, God invites: Seek me, and you will live. God is the One who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning.

Amos names their sins: you trample on the poor, take bribes, and turn away the needy in the courts. So he calls: Seek good, and not evil, that you may live. Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Some longed for the day of Yahweh, thinking it would be good for them. Amos warned: It is darkness, and not light. God rejected worship without justice: I hate, I despise your feasts. Take away from me the noise of your songs! What God wants: But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Amos 5 · Grade 5

Righteousness Like a Mighty Stream

Name Date

Read and Think

Amos 5 opens with a funeral song for a nation still alive: The virgin of Israel has fallen; She shall rise no more. Yet the lament holds an offer: For Yahweh says to the house of Israel: Seek me, and you will live. They should not seek Bethel or Gilgal, the shrines of empty religion, but God Himself, who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning.

The charges are specific: You who turn justice to wormwood. They hate him who reproves in the gate. You trample on the poor, take a bribe, and turn away the needy in the courts. Amos calls for change: Seek good, and not evil, that you may live. Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Many Israelites wanted the day of Yahweh, expecting victory. Amos replies: Why do you long for the day of Yahweh? It is darkness, and not light. Worship without justice was worthless: I hate, I despise your feasts, and I can't stand your solemn assemblies. Take away from me the noise of your songs! God's demand is one of the great lines of the prophets: But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream. Otherwise, Israel would go into captivity beyond Damascus.

Show What You Know

  1. Where should Israel not seek God?

  2. What did they turn justice to?

  3. What did they do to the one who reproves?

  4. Why did Israel long for the day of Yahweh?

  5. Where would Israel go if they did not change?
