Amos 3 · Grade 5
The Lord Yahweh Has Spoken
Read and Think
Amos 3 addresses the whole family which God brought up out of the land of Egypt. God says: I have chosen only you of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins. The word chosen means God knew them closely, like family. Privilege brings accountability.
Amos presses his point with questions from everyday life. Do two walk together, unless they have agreed? Will a lion roar in the thicket, when he has no prey? Can a bird fall in a trap on the earth, where no snare is set for him? Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Every result has a cause. Disaster in Israel would not be random.
The chain ends with Amos's own calling. Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Lord Yahweh has spoken. Who can but prophesy? God then calls witnesses to see the unrest and oppression in Samaria. Indeed they don't know to do right. Only a small remnant would be rescued, and the houses of ivory will perish.
