Amos 3 · Grade 4
Chosen and Responsible
Read and Think
Amos 3 begins: Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, children of Israel. God said, I have chosen only you of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins. Being chosen by God brings greater responsibility, not freedom to sin.
Then Amos asks a chain of questions. Do two walk together, unless they have agreed? Will a lion roar in the thicket, when he has no prey? Can a bird fall in a trap on the earth, where no snare is set for him? Each answer is no. Amos is showing that his message has a cause: God has spoken.
Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Lord Yahweh has spoken. Who can but prophesy? Amos could not stay quiet. Israel did not know to do right, so God would bring an end to their great houses.
