Amos 2 · Grade 5
God Turns to His Own People
Read and Think
Amos 2 finishes the nations with Moab, and then surprises his listeners. Yahweh says: For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have rejected Yahweh's law, and have not kept his statutes. The nations were judged for cruelty. Judah was judged for rejecting the law it knew.
Then the final oracle falls on Israel: For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and deny justice to the oppressed. They even lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge. They mixed worship with harm to the poor.
God recalls His grace: Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them. I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. I raised up some of your sons for prophets. But Israel commanded the prophets, saying, Don't prophesy! They rejected God's kindness and God's word. So Amos warns that the swift and the strong would not escape. The more God gives, the more He expects.
