Amos 2 · Grade 4
For Three Transgressions of Israel
Read and Think
Amos finished speaking against the nations, and then turned to Judah: they have rejected Yahweh's law, and have not kept his statutes. Judah had God's law but ignored it. Then Amos turned to Israel itself. These were the very people listening.
God would punish Israel too. They had sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and deny justice to the oppressed. Israel's sin was injustice against the poor.
God reminded them of His kindness: I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness. I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, Don't prophesy! Amos then warned that no one could escape God's judgment.

Think About It
Israel cheered when Amos judged their enemies, then heard their own sins named. Why is it easier to see other people's sins than our own?
Israel told the prophets, Don't prophesy! How do people today try to silence God's Word?

Take It Home
For families: talk about these together.
- God listed all He had done for Israel, and they still turned away. What has God done for you that you could remember?
- The strong and the fast would not escape. When are you tempted to hide from God, and how can you come to Him instead?
