Amos 1 · Grade 3

For Three Sins, Yes, for Four

Name Date

Read the Story

Amos was among the herdsmen of Tekoa. He was a shepherd, not a king or priest. God gave him words to say.

He said: Yahweh will roar from Zion. Then God spoke to the nations around Israel. Each time He said there were three sins, and even four. That means sin upon sin.

God named their sins. Damascus was cruel to Gilead. Gaza and Tyre sold whole communities as captives. Tyre didn't remember the brotherly covenant. Edom chased his brother with the sword. God would send fire on their palaces.

Memory Verse

He said: “Yahweh will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn, and the top of Carmel will wither.”

Amos 1 · Grade 4

God Judges the Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

The book begins: The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa. Amos was a shepherd whom God sent with a message. He said: Yahweh will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem. Like a lion's roar, God's word would shake the land.

God then speaks to six nations around Israel. Each message begins the same way: For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment. The pattern shows sins piling up until God acts.

The sins are cruel acts against people. Gaza carried away captive the whole community. Tyre didn't remember the brotherly covenant. Edom pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity. These nations did not have God's law, yet God held them responsible for cruelty. For each one, God says He will send a fire to devour its palaces.

Amos 1 · Grade 5

Three Transgressions, Yes, Four

Name Date

Read and Think

Amos 1 opens: The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam. Amos was not from a family of prophets. He was a herdsman whom God called. His first words: Yahweh will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn.

Amos then speaks to the nations surrounding Israel: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom and Ammon. Each oracle uses the same pattern: For three transgressions, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment. The phrase means sin added to sin, until the measure is full. God's patience is real, but it is not endless.

God names their crimes against people. Damascus threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron. Gaza carried away captive the whole community, to deliver them up to Edom. Tyre didn't remember the brotherly covenant. Edom pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually. Ammon was violent to enlarge their border. Each time God says He will send a fire on their palaces. Imagine Israel listening and agreeing as Amos named their enemies. Chapter 2 will turn the same words on Israel.

Show What You Know

  1. Was Amos from a family of prophets?

  2. What does the phrase three, yes, four mean?

  3. What did Tyre not remember?

  4. Why was Ammon violent?

  5. What will chapter 2 do with the same words?
