Amos 1 · Grade 5
Three Transgressions, Yes, Four
Read and Think
Amos 1 opens: The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam. Amos was not from a family of prophets. He was a herdsman whom God called. His first words: Yahweh will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn.
Amos then speaks to the nations surrounding Israel: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom and Ammon. Each oracle uses the same pattern: For three transgressions, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment. The phrase means sin added to sin, until the measure is full. God's patience is real, but it is not endless.
God names their crimes against people. Damascus threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron. Gaza carried away captive the whole community, to deliver them up to Edom. Tyre didn't remember the brotherly covenant. Edom pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually. Ammon was violent to enlarge their border. Each time God says He will send a fire on their palaces. Imagine Israel listening and agreeing as Amos named their enemies. Chapter 2 will turn the same words on Israel.
