Chosen to Serve

Read and Think

Growth brought a problem. The Hellenists, Greek-speaking believers, complained that their widows were neglected in the daily serving, compared with those of the Hebrews.

The twelve did not ignore it. They called the multitude together and said it was not fit for them to leave the word of God to serve tables. Instead the believers should select seven men of good report, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, to appoint over this business, while the apostles continued steadfastly in prayer and the ministry of the word (Acts 6:4).

The plan pleased everyone. Their choices included Stephen, full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, along with Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. The apostles prayed and laid their hands on them. Luke's summary follows: the word of God increased, disciples multiplied in Jerusalem, and a great company of priests were obedient to the faith (Acts 6:7).

Stephen, full of faith and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. Men from the Synagogue of the Freedmen and others disputed with him, but they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. So they secretly induced men to accuse him of blasphemy, stirred up the people, elders, and scribes, and set up false witnesses before the council. They claimed he spoke against the temple and the law. Yet all who sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face like it was the face of an angel.
