Serving Tables, Serving the Word

As the church grew, a complaint arose. The Greek-speaking believers said their widows were overlooked in the daily serving of food.

The twelve gathered the disciples. They said it was not right for them to leave the word of God to serve tables. They asked the believers to choose seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and wisdom. The apostles would keep on in prayer and the ministry of the word.

The whole group chose Stephen, full of faith and the Holy Spirit, along with Philip and five others. The apostles prayed and laid hands on them. "The word of God increased," and a great company of priests obeyed the faith.

Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders. Men from a synagogue argued with him but could not withstand his wisdom. They got men to say they had heard him speak against Moses and God. They stirred up the people and brought him to the council with false witnesses. Everyone there saw his face like the face of an angel.
