Paul visited many believers. He gave them words of courage.

One night Paul talked a long time. A boy named Eutychus fell asleep in a window. He fell down! Paul went and hugged him. The boy was alive. Everyone was glad.

Paul called his friends from Ephesus. He told them to care for God's people like a shepherd cares for sheep.

Paul said Jesus taught that giving is better than getting. Then Paul knelt and prayed with them all (Acts 20:36). They hugged him and cried. Then they walked him to the ship.

More Blessed to Give

Name Date

Read the Story

After the uproar in Ephesus, Paul went through Macedonia and Greece. He encouraged the believers with many words.

At Troas the believers met to break bread. Paul talked until midnight. A young man named Eutychus sat in a window and fell into deep sleep. He fell from the third floor and was picked up as if dead. Paul went down and hugged him. He said not to be troubled, for his life was in him. They brought the boy in alive and were greatly comforted.

At Miletus Paul called the elders from Ephesus. He reminded them how he served the Lord with humility and tears. He said the Holy Spirit warned that hard times waited for him. But he wanted to finish his race with joy.

Paul told the elders to care for the flock, God's church. He reminded them that the Lord Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. Then he knelt and prayed with them all. They cried and hugged him and walked him to the ship.

Finish the Race with Joy

Name Date

Read and Think

After the uproar, Paul encouraged the disciples and left for Macedonia and Greece. When some plotted against him, he went back through Macedonia. Several companions traveled with him.

At Troas, on the first day of the week, the disciples gathered to break bread. Paul talked until midnight. A young man named Eutychus sat in the window, fell into deep sleep, and fell from the third floor. He was taken up dead. Paul went down, embraced him, and said, "Don't be troubled, for his life is in him." They brought the boy in alive and were greatly comforted.

At Miletus Paul sent for the elders of the church at Ephesus. He reminded them that he had served the Lord with all humility. He had taught them publicly and from house to house. He said he did not hold his life dear, so that he might finish his race with joy and testify to the Good News of the grace of God.

He told them to shepherd the church of God, because harmful teachers would come. He had coveted no one's silver or gold. He reminded them of the Lord Jesus' words that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Then he knelt down and prayed with them all. They wept, embraced him, and went with him to the ship.

Acts 20 · Grade 5

Farewell at Miletus

Name Date

Read and Think

After the uproar ceased, Paul encouraged the disciples and departed for Macedonia, then Greece, where he stayed three months. When a plot was formed against him as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. Sopater, Aristarchus, Secundus, Gaius, Timothy, Tychicus, and Trophimus accompanied him.

At Troas, on the first day of the week, the disciples gathered to break bread, and Paul talked until midnight. There were many lights in the upper room. Eutychus, sitting in the window and weighed down with deep sleep, fell from the third floor and was taken up dead. Paul went down, embraced him, and said his life was in him. Paul broke bread, talked until daybreak, and departed. They brought the boy in alive and were greatly comforted.

Hurrying to reach Jerusalem by Pentecost, Paul called the Ephesian elders to Miletus. He reminded them how he had served the Lord with humility, tears, and trials, holding back nothing profitable. He had testified to Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus. Bound by the Spirit, he was going to Jerusalem, not knowing what would happen, except that the Holy Spirit testified that bonds and afflictions awaited him. Yet he did not hold his life dear, that he might finish his race with joy and the ministry received from the Lord Jesus.

He charged them to take heed to themselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit made them overseers, to shepherd the assembly which God purchased with his own blood. After his departure, vicious wolves would enter, and some from among themselves would draw disciples away; so they must watch. He commended them to God and to the word of his grace. He had coveted no one's silver, gold, or clothing; his own hands had served his needs. He reminded them of the Lord Jesus' words, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Then he knelt and prayed with them all, and they wept, sorrowing most that they would see his face no more.

  1. Why did Paul decide to return through Macedonia?

  2. What did the Holy Spirit testify awaited Paul?

  3. To what did Paul commend the elders?

  4. What made the elders sorrow most?
