Lord and Christ

Read and Think

Pentecost came, and the believers were with one accord in one place. A sound like the rushing of a mighty wind filled the house, and tongues like fire rested on each of them. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they spoke with other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability.

Jerusalem was full of devout Jews from every nation under the sky. Each heard the mighty works of God in his own native language. Some were perplexed and asked what it meant; others mocked and said they were filled with new wine.

Peter answered that it was only the third hour of the day. This was what Joel spoke of: God pouring out his Spirit, with wonders above and signs below, and the promise that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Peter then spoke of Jesus, whom God raised up, quoting David's psalm that God would not leave his Holy One to see decay. He ended by saying that God has made him both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36).

Cut to the heart, the hearers asked what to do. Peter told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He said the promise was for them, their children, and all who are far off. About three thousand souls were added that day. Acts 2:42-47 then describes the new community: teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, sharing possessions, and praising God, with the Lord adding to their number day by day.
