Not Far from Each One of Us

Name Date

Read the Story

In Thessalonica Paul taught from the Scriptures for three Sabbaths. He showed that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. Some believed, but others gathered a crowd and caused trouble. So the believers sent Paul and Silas away at night.

In Berea the people were more noble. They gladly heard the word and checked the Scriptures every day. Many of them believed.

In Athens Paul was upset to see the city full of idols. He talked with people in the marketplace every day. They brought him to the Areopagus to hear his new teaching.

Paul said, "The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn't dwell in temples made with hands." God gives life and breath to all. He is not far from each one of us. Paul spoke of Jesus rising from the dead. Some laughed, some wanted to hear more, and some believed.

Memory Verse

“The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands.”

Acts 17 · Grade 4

Paul in Athens

Name Date

Read and Think

In Thessalonica Paul reasoned from the Scriptures that "the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead." Some were persuaded, including many devout Greeks and prominent women. Others gathered a mob and set the city in an uproar. They dragged Jason and some brothers before the rulers, and the believers sent Paul and Silas away by night.

The people of Berea "received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so." Many believed. When troublemakers came from Thessalonica, the brothers sent Paul to Athens.

In Athens Paul's spirit was provoked as he saw the city full of idols. He reasoned in the synagogue and in the marketplace every day. Some philosophers brought him to the Areopagus. Paul said he had found an altar inscribed TO AN UNKNOWN GOD, and he would tell them about this God.

He said God made the world and does not live in temples made with hands. He gives to all life and breath and all things. He made every nation from one man so they should seek him, "though he is not far from each one of us." God now commands all people everywhere to repent. He has appointed a day of judgment by the man he raised from the dead. Some mocked, others wanted to hear again, and some believed.

Acts 17 · Grade 5

The Unknown God Made Known

Name Date

Read and Think

Passing through Amphipolis and Apollonia, Paul came to Thessalonica. For three Sabbath days he reasoned from the Scriptures. He explained and showed that the Christ had to suffer and rise again, and he said, "This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ." Some were persuaded. But others, moved with envy, gathered a mob and set the city in an uproar. They accused the believers of acting against Caesar's decrees, saying there was another king, Jesus.

The Bereans were more noble than those in Thessalonica. They received the word with all readiness of mind and examined the Scriptures daily. Many believed, including prominent Greek women and not a few men. When agitators arrived from Thessalonica, Paul was sent to the sea and then to Athens.

Waiting at Athens, Paul saw the city full of idols, and his spirit was provoked. Epicurean and Stoic philosophers called him a babbler and a setter forth of strange gods, because he preached Jesus and the resurrection. Standing in the middle of the Areopagus, Paul said they were very religious. He had found an altar TO AN UNKNOWN GOD, and he would announce to them what they worshiped in ignorance.

He declared that the God who made the world is Lord of heaven and earth. "He isn't served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath and all things." From one blood he made every nation and set their times and boundaries, that they should seek him. He quoted their own poets: in him we live, move, and have our being, and we are his offspring. God overlooked the times of ignorance but now commands all people everywhere to repent. He has appointed a day and gave assurance by raising a man from the dead. Some mocked; others wanted to hear more; and some joined him, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris.

  1. What did Paul's opponents say there was besides Caesar?

  2. Why did the philosophers call Paul a setter forth of strange gods?
