Name Date

Read the Story

Paul and Silas took a young disciple named Timothy with them. The Holy Spirit did not let them speak in Asia. Then Paul saw a vision of a man from Macedonia asking for help.

At Philippi they went by a river to pray. A seller of purple cloth named Lydia listened. The Lord opened her heart. She and her household were baptized, and she asked them to stay at her house.

A slave girl had a spirit that her owners used to make money. Paul told the spirit to come out in the name of Jesus Christ. Her owners were angry. Paul and Silas were hurt and put in jail with their feet in stocks.

About midnight they were praying and singing hymns. The prisoners were listening. A great earthquake opened all the doors. The jailer asked what he must do to be saved. They said to believe in the Lord Jesus (Acts 16:31). He washed their wounds, and his whole household was baptized.

Come Over and Help Us

Name Date

Read and Think

At Lystra Paul met Timothy, a disciple well spoken of, and took him along. The Holy Spirit kept them from speaking the word in Asia, and the Spirit did not allow them into Bithynia. At Troas Paul saw a vision of a man of Macedonia begging, "Come over into Macedonia and help us."

At Philippi, on the Sabbath, they went by a riverside where prayer was made. Lydia, a seller of purple who worshiped God, heard them. "The Lord opened her heart to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul." She and her household were baptized.

A slave girl with a spirit of fortune-telling brought her masters much gain. After many days Paul commanded the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ. Her masters dragged Paul and Silas to the magistrates. They were beaten and thrown into the inner prison with their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening. A great earthquake shook the prison, and every door opened. The jailer asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." He washed their stripes, was baptized with all his household, and rejoiced.

The Gospel Comes to Philippi

Name Date

Read and Think

At Lystra Paul found Timothy, son of a believing Jewish woman and a Greek father, well reported of by the brothers, and took him along. As they delivered the decisions of the apostles and elders, the assemblies were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily. The Holy Spirit forbade them to speak the word in Asia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them into Bithynia. At Troas a vision of a man of Macedonia pleading for help led them to conclude that God had called them to preach there.

At Philippi, a Roman colony, they went on the Sabbath to a riverside place of prayer. Lydia of Thyatira, a seller of purple who worshiped God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart. After she and her household were baptized, she urged them to stay in her house.

A slave girl with a spirit of divination followed them for many days, crying out that they were servants of the Most High God. Paul, greatly annoyed, commanded the spirit in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her, and it came out that very hour. Seeing their hope of gain gone, her masters dragged Paul and Silas before the magistrates, who had them beaten with rods and thrown into the inner prison, their feet secured in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God while the prisoners listened. A great earthquake shook the foundations, the doors opened, and every bond was loosed. The jailer, supposing the prisoners had escaped, was about to kill himself, but Paul cried, "Don't harm yourself, for we are all here!" Trembling, the jailer asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." That same hour he washed their stripes and was baptized with all his household, then set food before them, rejoicing. In the morning Paul, a Roman citizen, insisted that the magistrates themselves bring them out.
