Acts 15 · Grade 4
Grace for All
Read and Think
Men from Judea taught, "Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can't be saved." Paul and Barnabas disagreed sharply. The church sent them to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.
After much debate, Peter stood up. He reminded them that God chose him to bring the good news to the Gentiles. God, who knows the heart, gave them the Holy Spirit and "made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith." Peter asked why they should put a heavy yoke on the disciples. "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they are."
Barnabas and Paul told of the signs God had done among the Gentiles. Then James said the words of the prophets agreed with this. His judgment was not to trouble the Gentiles who turn to God. They should only keep away from idols and a few other things.
The apostles and elders sent a letter with Judas and Silas. When the church in Antioch read it, they rejoiced over the encouragement. Later Paul and Barnabas had a sharp disagreement about John Mark and parted. Barnabas sailed to Cyprus with Mark, and Paul went with Silas, strengthening the churches.
