An Angel in the Prison

Name Date

Read the Story

King Herod began to hurt people in the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed. Then he put Peter in prison, with soldiers to guard him.

Peter was kept in prison, but the church prayed to God for him without stopping (Acts 12:5). The night before Herod would bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers. An angel came, and a light shone in the cell. The angel told him to get up quickly. His chains fell off.

Peter followed the angel past the guards. The iron gate to the city opened by itself. Then the angel left. Peter knew the Lord had sent his angel to save him.

Peter went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were praying. Rhoda was so glad to hear his voice that she did not open the gate. The others said she was crazy, but Peter kept knocking. Later, Herod was proud and did not give God the glory, and God judged him. But the word of God grew.

Prayer and the Iron Gate

Name Date

Read and Think

King Herod stretched out his hands to oppress the church. He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. Seeing that it pleased some, he arrested Peter during the days of unleavened bread and put him under four squads of soldiers.

Peter was kept in prison, but constant prayer was made by the church to God for him. The night before his trial, Peter slept bound with two chains between two soldiers. An angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. The angel struck his side and said, "Stand up quickly!" The chains fell off.

Peter thought he saw a vision. They passed the first and second guard. The iron gate opened by itself. When the angel left, Peter said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me."

He came to Mary's house, where many were praying. Rhoda knew his voice and ran in for joy without opening the gate. They said, "You are crazy!" When they opened, they were amazed. Later Herod gave a speech, and the people shouted that it was the voice of a god. An angel struck Herod because he did not give God the glory. But the word of God grew and multiplied (Acts 12:24).

Acts 12 · Grade 5

The Word Grew

Name Date

Read and Think

About that time King Herod stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly. He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased some, he seized Peter as well, during the days of unleavened bread. He meant to bring him out to the people after the Passover.

Against the king's power stood the church's prayer: "constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him" (Acts 12:5). On the night before Herod would bring him out, Peter slept between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with guards at the door. An angel of the Lord appeared, light shone in the cell, the chains fell off, and Peter followed, thinking it a vision. They passed two guard posts, and the iron gate leading into the city opened of its own accord.

Coming to himself, Peter knew that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of Herod. He went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered praying. Rhoda recognized his voice and, for joy, ran to report it without opening the gate. The praying believers told her she was crazy and then guessed it was his angel, until Peter's continued knocking proved otherwise. Peter told them how the Lord had brought him out and asked them to tell James and the brothers.

The chapter ends with a contrast. Herod, arrayed in royal clothing, gave a speech, and the people shouted that it was the voice of a god. Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory. "But the word of God grew and multiplied" (Acts 12:24). Barnabas and Saul returned from their service, bringing John Mark with them.

  1. When did Herod plan to bring Peter out to the people?

  2. What two things did the believers say before they believed it was Peter?

  3. Whom did Peter ask them to tell?

  4. What contrast ends the chapter?
