Witnesses to the Ends of the Earth

Name Date

Read the Story

The book of Acts begins by speaking to a man named Theophilus. It reminds him of the first book, which told what Jesus did and taught. After Jesus suffered and rose, he showed himself alive to the apostles for forty days.

Jesus told them not to leave Jerusalem. They were to wait for the promise of the Father. John baptized in water, but they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit in a few days.

The apostles asked if Jesus would now restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus said it was not for them to know the times. Instead they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came. They would be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

While they watched, Jesus was taken up, and a cloud hid him. Two men in white clothes stood by them. They said this Jesus would come back in the same way. The followers, with Mary the mother of Jesus and his brothers, kept praying together. Then they chose Matthias to take a place among the twelve.

Memory Verse

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

The Promise of Power

Name Date

Read and Think

Acts opens by speaking to Theophilus. It recalls "the first book" about all that Jesus began to do and to teach. For forty days the risen Jesus gave the apostles many proofs that he was alive. He spoke about God's Kingdom. He told them to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father.

They asked if he would now restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus said the times and seasons are set by the Father. Their task was different. They would receive power when the Holy Spirit came. Then they would be his witnesses, from Jerusalem to the uttermost parts of the earth (Acts 1:8).

Then, as they watched, he was taken up. A cloud hid him from their sight. Two men in white asked why they stood looking into the sky. They said this Jesus would come back in the same way.

Back in Jerusalem, about one hundred twenty believers kept on praying. Mary the mother of Jesus was with them. Peter said someone must take the place Judas had left. Two men were put forward. The group prayed and drew lots, and the lot fell on Matthias.

Acts 1 · Grade 5

Waiting and Praying

Name Date

Read and Think

Acts is addressed to Theophilus, and it picks up where "the first book" ended, with the risen Jesus teaching his apostles for forty days about the Kingdom of God. He commanded them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father, for they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from then (Acts 1:5).

The apostles still asked about a restored kingdom for Israel. Jesus redirected them: the times and seasons are set by the Father's own authority, but they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Acts 1:8 then works like a map for the whole book: witness in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.

As they watched, Jesus was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight. Two men in white clothing asked why they stood looking into the sky, and said that this Jesus would come back in the same way they saw him go.

The waiting was not idle. The group of about one hundred twenty continued with one accord in prayer. Peter said Scripture had to be fulfilled about Judas. A man who had been with them from John's baptism until Jesus was taken up must become a witness of the resurrection. They put forward Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias, prayed to the Lord who knows the hearts of all men, and drew lots; the lot fell on Matthias, who was counted with the eleven apostles.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jesus say the apostles would be baptized in?

  2. Why can Acts 1:8 be called a map for the book?

  3. What did the believers do with one accord while they waited?

  4. What did the new apostle need to have seen?
