A Crown Waiting

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul gave Timothy an important job. He said to preach the word, ready at all times. Some people would only want to hear what they liked, not the truth. But Timothy should stay calm, keep going, and tell others about Jesus.

Paul knew he would soon go to be with the Lord. He said he had fought hard, finished his race, and kept his faith. A crown was waiting for him. The Lord would give it to him and to all who love Jesus' coming.

Paul asked Timothy to come soon. Only Luke was with him. He asked Timothy to bring Mark, his cloak, and his books. Some had left Paul alone. But the Lord stood by him and made him strong. Paul praised God forever.

I Have Kept the Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul solemnly charges Timothy before God and Christ Jesus: preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season. Timothy should correct, rebuke, and encourage with patience. Paul warns that the time will come when people will not listen to sound teaching but will gather teachers who say what they want to hear. Timothy must stay sober-minded, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill his ministry.

Paul knows the time of his departure has come. He writes: I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. The crown of righteousness is stored up for him, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give him. It is not for Paul only, but for all who have loved His appearing.

Paul asks Timothy to come soon. Demas left him, having loved this present world. Only Luke is with him. Paul asks Timothy to bring Mark, who is useful for service, and the cloak and books left at Troas. He warns about Alexander the coppersmith, who greatly opposed their words. At his first defense no one stood with Paul, but the Lord was with him and made him strong. Paul is sure the Lord will bring him safely into His heavenly Kingdom.

The Crown of Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul gives a solemn command before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead. He writes: preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and teaching. He warns that someday people will refuse sound teaching and, having itching ears, will heap up teachers to suit their own desires and turn away to fables. Timothy, however, must be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill his ministry.

Paul explains that he is already being poured out as an offering, and his departure is near. He writes: I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. From now on, the crown of righteousness is stored up for him. The Lord, the righteous judge, will hand it to him on that day, and not to him only, but to all those who have loved His appearing.

Paul asks Timothy to come soon. Demas left him, having loved this present world, and others have gone to other places. Only Luke is with him. Paul asks Timothy to take Mark and bring him, for he is useful to him for service, and to bring the cloak, the books, and especially the parchments. He warns Timothy about Alexander the coppersmith. At Paul's first defense, everyone left him; Paul asks that it not be held against them. But the Lord stood by him, so the whole message could be preached for the Gentiles to hear. Paul is confident: the Lord will rescue him from every evil and keep him safe for His heavenly Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever.

  2. What will people with itching ears turn away to?
