Wise for Salvation

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul warned that hard times would come. Many people would love themselves, love money, and love fun more than God. They would act holy but not really follow God. Paul told Timothy to stay away from their ways.

Timothy had seen how Paul lived. He saw Paul's faith, love, and patience. He saw Paul suffer for Jesus in many cities. But the Lord rescued Paul each time. Paul said those who follow Jesus will face hard times too.

Paul told Timothy to keep holding on to what he learned. Since he was a baby, Timothy had known the holy Scriptures. They make us wise to be saved through faith in Jesus. All Scripture comes from God. It teaches, corrects, and trains us to do what is right.

Read and Think

Paul writes: But know this: that in the last days, grievous times will come. Many will love themselves and money. They will boast and be unthankful. They will love pleasure more than God. They will look godly but deny God's power. Paul tells Timothy to turn away from such people.

But Timothy has followed Paul's teaching and way of life. He has seen Paul's faith, patience, and love. He knows what Paul suffered at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, and how the Lord rescued him every time. Paul says all who want to live for Jesus will face hard times.

Paul tells Timothy to hold on to what he learned. He knows who taught him. From infancy, Timothy has known the holy Scriptures, which can make him wise to be saved by trusting Christ Jesus. Paul explains that every Scripture is God-breathed. It is useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in what is right. So God's people are ready for every good work.

Every Scripture Is God-Breathed

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes: But know this: that in the last days, grievous times will come. He describes people who are lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to parents, unthankful, and unforgiving. They will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding a form of godliness but having denied its power. Paul tells Timothy to turn away from them. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, such people oppose the truth, but everyone will see their foolishness.

Timothy, in contrast, has followed Paul's teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and steadfastness. He knows the persecutions Paul suffered at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. Paul writes: I endured those persecutions. The Lord delivered me out of them all. Paul adds that everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ will face persecution, while deceivers will grow worse and worse.

Paul writes: But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them. Since infancy Timothy has known the holy Scriptures, which can make him wise to be saved by trusting in Christ Jesus. Then Paul gives a central truth about the Bible: Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The purpose is that God's people would be fully ready for every good work.
