An Example to Follow

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes: Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified. He also asks prayer to be rescued from evil people, for not everyone has faith. Then he gives a strong promise: But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. Paul prays that the Lord will direct their hearts into God's love and Christ's endurance.

Some believers were refusing to work and were becoming busybodies. Paul reminds them that when he was with them, he paid for his food and worked night and day so he would not be a burden. He had a right to their help, but he chose to be an example. He had taught: If anyone is not willing to work, don't let him eat. He tells those who are idle to work quietly and earn their own food.

Paul says: But you, brothers, don't be weary in doing what is right. If someone will not listen, the church should keep apart from him so that he may be ashamed. Yet Paul adds, Don't count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. He closes: Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. He signs the greeting with his own hand.

The Lord of Peace

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul closes the letter with requests and instructions. He asks the believers to pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did among them. He also asks prayer that he may be rescued from unreasonable and evil people, for not all have faith. But Paul is sure of this: But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. He is confident they are obeying, and he prays, May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and into the perseverance of Christ.

Paul then addresses a problem. Some believers were walking in rebellion, refusing to work and acting as busybodies. Paul reminds them that he did not eat anyone's food without paying. He worked night and day so he would not burden anyone. He had the right to support, but he wanted to set an example for them to imitate. When he was with them, he had commanded: If anyone is not willing to work, don't let him eat. He urges those who are idle to work quietly and earn their own bread.

Paul encourages the faithful: But you, brothers, don't be weary in doing what is right. If anyone refuses to obey this letter, the church should take note and not keep company with him, so that he may feel ashamed and change. Paul adds: Don't count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. He prays: Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. Paul writes the final greeting with his own hand, the sign in every letter, and blesses them with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
