Elisha told the Shunammite woman to leave. The Lord had called for a famine of seven years. She lived in the land of the Philistines. After seven years she came back. She went to the king to ask for her house and land.

Right then, Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha gave life to a dead boy. The woman came in, and Gehazi said this was the woman and her son. The king gave back her land and all its crops from those years.

Elisha went to Damascus. Ben Hadad was sick and sent Hazael to ask if he would get well. Elisha cried. He said Hazael would be king and do great harm to Israel. Hazael went back and took the throne. God's Timing and God's Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Elisha warned the Shunammite woman whose son he had restored that the Lord had called for a seven-year famine. She went with her household to the land of the Philistines. When she returned, she went to the king to appeal for her house and land.

At that very moment, the king was asking Gehazi to tell all the great things Elisha had done. As Gehazi told how Elisha had restored the dead boy to life, the woman came in. The king asked her, and she told him. He appointed an officer to restore all that was hers, including the produce of the fields since she left.

Elisha went to Damascus, where Ben Hadad was sick. Hazael brought forty camel loads of gifts to ask if the king would recover. Elisha stared at him until Hazael was ashamed, and then wept. He said Hazael would become king and bring terrible harm on Israel. Hazael returned, smothered Ben Hadad with a wet cloth, and reigned. In Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat married Ahab's daughter and did evil. Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah, for David's sake, as He promised to give him a lamp always.

Providence and Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

The Shunammite woman's story shows God's quiet providence. She obeyed Elisha's warning and left during a famine. Seven years later, she returned to appeal for her land at the very moment Gehazi was telling the king about her son's resurrection. The timing was no accident. God arranged it so that her testimony confirmed the miracle and her property was restored.

In Damascus, Elisha met Hazael and wept. God had already told Elijah at Horeb that Hazael would be anointed over Syria (1 Kings 19:15). Elisha foresaw the suffering Hazael would bring on Israel. Hazael pretended humility, calling himself a dog, but went home, smothered Ben Hadad, and seized the throne. God's foreknowledge did not excuse Hazael's evil. He chose it.

Judah's kings were sliding toward Ahab's ways. Jehoram married Athaliah, Ahab's daughter, and walked in the ways of Israel's kings. His son Ahaziah followed. Edom and Libnah revolted. Yet one verse holds the line: the Lord would not destroy Judah, for David's sake, to give him a lamp always. That lamp would finally shine in David's greatest Son. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the root and offspring of David, the bright morning star (Revelation 22:16).

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the woman's timing no accident?

  2. Where had God told Elijah about Hazael?

  3. Whom did Jehoram of Judah marry?

  4. What is Jesus called in Revelation 22:16 in the New Testament?
