The Empty Camp

Read the Story

The city had no food. Elisha said that tomorrow there would be lots of food. One officer did not believe him.

Four sick men sat by the gate. They went to the enemy camp. No one was there! God had made the enemy hear a big army. They ran away and left their food.

The men ate and drank. Then they said it was wrong to keep this good news. They told the city. Everyone had food, just as Elisha said.

Memory Verse

Then they said to one another, “We aren’t doing right. Today is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let’s go and tell the king’s household.”

A Day of Good News

Name Date

Read the Story

Samaria had no food because the Syrian army was around it. Elisha said that by tomorrow, flour and barley would be cheap. An officer said that could not happen even if God opened windows in heaven. Elisha said he would see it but not eat it.

Four men with leprosy sat at the gate. They said they would die if they stayed. So they went to the Syrian camp at dusk. No one was there! God had made the Syrians hear chariots and horses. They thought kings were coming to fight. They ran and left their tents, food, and silver.

The men ate and hid some treasure. Then they said they were not doing right. This was a day of good news. They told the gatekeepers. The king sent men to look. The road was full of things the Syrians dropped. Food was cheap, just as Elisha said. The officer saw it, but he did not eat it.

Memory Verse

Then they said to one another, “We aren’t doing right. Today is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let’s go and tell the king’s household.”

We Are Not Doing Right

Name Date

Read and Think

During the siege of Samaria, Elisha announced God's word: by this time tomorrow, fine flour and barley would sell for a shekel at the gate. The king's officer scoffed that even if the Lord made windows in heaven, this could not happen. Elisha told him he would see it with his own eyes but not eat of it.

Four men with leprosy at the gate reasoned that they would die whether they stayed or went. At twilight they went to the Syrian camp and found it empty. The Lord had made the Syrians hear the noise of chariots, horses, and a great army. They thought Israel had hired the Hittites and Egyptians, and they fled for their lives, leaving tents, horses, and donkeys.

The lepers ate, drank, and hid silver, gold, and clothing. Then they said to one another that they were not doing right. This was a day of good news, and they were keeping silent. They told the gatekeepers. The king feared a trap, but scouts found the road to the Jordan full of garments the Syrians had thrown away. The people plundered the camp, and food sold at the very price Elisha had said. The officer was trampled in the gate and died, as the man of God had said.

A Day of Good News

Name Date

Read and Think

Samaria was in desperate famine. Elisha announced that within a day food would be cheap. The king's officer mocked, saying even windows in heaven could not bring such a thing. His unbelief earned a sober sentence: he would see God's provision but not share in it.

God's deliverance came through the least likely people. Four outcast lepers, who lived outside the gate by law, decided to go to the enemy camp. They found it abandoned. The Lord had caused the Syrians to hear the sound of a great army, and they fled in panic. God won the battle without a single Israelite soldier.

After feasting, the lepers were struck by conscience. They said they were not doing right; this was a day of good news, and they were keeping silent. They brought the news to the city, and the famine ended exactly as God had spoken. The officer who scoffed was trampled at the gate. God's word proved true in mercy and in judgment. In the New Testament, Paul asks how people can believe in Him of whom they have not heard, and how they can hear without someone preaching (Romans 10:14).

Show What You Know

  1. What sentence did the officer's unbelief bring?

  2. Why were the lepers unlikely messengers?

  3. How was the battle won?

  4. What does Paul ask in Romans 10:14 in the New Testament?
