God Warned Israel

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel did not follow God. They made idols. They served false gods. God sent prophets again and again. The prophets said, Turn from your evil ways.

But Israel did not listen. So the king of Assyria came. He took the city of Samaria. He took the people far away to Assyria.

God was sad, but He was fair. He had warned them many times. God wants us to listen to Him and obey.

Memory Verse

Yet Yahweh testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

Why Israel Fell

Name Date

Read the Story

Hoshea was the last king of Israel. He stopped paying the king of Assyria. So Shalmaneser came and put Samaria under siege for three years. Then he took the city. He carried Israel away to Assyria.

This happened because Israel sinned against the Lord. He had brought them out of Egypt. But they served other gods. They set up pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill. They made two calves of gold.

The Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet. He said, Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments. But they would not listen. They were stubborn like their fathers. So the Lord removed Israel from His sight. The king of Assyria brought other peoples to live in Samaria. They feared the Lord but served their own gods too.

Memory Verse

Yet Yahweh testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

The Lord Testified

Name Date

Read and Think

In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria after a three-year siege and carried Israel away to Assyria, settling them in Halah, by the Habor, and in the cities of the Medes. Hoshea had conspired with So king of Egypt and stopped paying tribute.

This happened because Israel sinned against the Lord who brought them out of Egypt. They feared other gods and walked in the customs of the nations. They built high places in all their towns and set up pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill. They served idols, though the Lord had said, You shall not do this thing. They made two calves, worshiped all the army of the sky, served Baal, and even made their children pass through the fire.

Yet the Lord testified to Israel and Judah by every prophet and seer, saying, Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments. They would not listen but hardened their necks. So the Lord removed them from His sight. Assyria resettled Samaria with people from Babylon and other places. When the Lord sent lions among them, the king sent back a priest to teach them how to fear the Lord. They feared the Lord but also served their own gods.

The Verdict of History

Name Date

Read and Think

Samaria fell in 722 BC after a three-year siege, and the ten tribes were scattered across Assyria. Kings pauses here for a sermon explaining why. The cause was not Assyria's strength but Israel's sin. The Lord who redeemed them from Egypt had been abandoned for idols.

The charge sheet is long: high places, pillars, Asherah poles, the golden calves, worship of the army of the sky, Baal, divination, and child sacrifice. Above all stands the patience of God. He testified by every prophet and seer, calling them to turn. Israel hardened their necks and rejected His covenant. They went after vanity and became vain, becoming like the idols they served.

The chapter ends with the mixed worship of the settlers, who feared the Lord and served their own gods. This is the origin of the later Samaritans. God's judgment was just, but it was not His last word. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman and offers her living water, saying true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:10, 23).
